When designing the packaging for Broadway cast albums, I’m typically sent the show’s logo (key art), a folder of production photos + a boat load of text (lyrics, liner notes, etc). Then I’m given carte blanche to create an imaginative & organized souvenir package inspired by what I see and hear. Beetlejuice (musicalized by Eddie Perfect) has always had an inherent aesthetic, so it was a no-brainer to design a package adorned with stripes, spirals & teeth.
When spinning, the vinyl picture discs look like a moving vortex for a pretty rad effect, and Urban Outfitters also commissioned a limited run of neon yellow records after the soundtrack gained serious popularity. You can see an unboxing video of the original vinyl here:
Obviously physical soundtracks area less popular due to streaming platforms, but I like to think of them as collector’s items for fans; especially for folks who don’t get the chance to see the actual show. I coveted Broadway cast albums as a theater kid, and it is still surreal to see my name printed in them.
